Having been in Sri Lanka for almost 2 months and flitting back and forth between Colombo, we couldn’t turn down the offer to pop back one more time and visit Movenpick Hotel. The first new five-star hotel in over twenty five years.
The Movenpick Group is a well established chain with over 80 luxury hotels, resorts and Nile cruisers dotted around the globe. Known for its class and ever growing success, their Sri Lankan property is situated right in the very heart of Colombo.
As we arrived, we were greeted by its trademark red logo and looking up from the foot of the skyscraper, the building was a work of art that stood out amongst the competition in the city.
Past the valet and through the revolving doors, we couldn’t help but notice the open space and beautiful modern designs as we entered the hotel itself. The staff were attentive and faultless, and just what you’d expect from a five star complex.
Of the 219 rooms available, ours was amongst some that have the best views. Up in the lift we went to the 18th floor and through the fancy hallways, until we finally reached our incredible ocean view suite.
The room came with many small perks, from unlimited bottles of water to complimentary care kits and of course a fridge and snack bar! But of all the luxuries the one thing that stood out was…the bed. It was super soft and with luxurious bedding it was like falling into a marshmallow…guaranteeing you an excellent nights sleep.
The bedroom wasn’t the only room that looked out onto the ocean though. Past the office area and plasma TV was the entrance to the bathroom, which again was of high end quality. The shower was fully furnished with glass giving once again stunning views over the ocean…but don’t worry, there is a blind for privacy.
Everything about the bathroom was plush and elegant and there were even ‘his and hers’ sinks.
The facilities available at Movenpick were endless. So much so that we didn’t even have to leave the hotel.
On the 23rd floor was Spa Ceylon, a beauty salon and fitness centre. Depending on whether you felt the urge to workout or lay back and be pampered…or both!
There were restaurants galore, from Japanese with Chef Nobu to the French cuisine in Brasserie. Our personal favourite though was AYU, serving up all you can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. There were no limits to the choices of food on offer and we were lucky enough to arrive on a Thursday which was seafood night.
The rooftop is the place to be, where the bar and infinity pool are located – you can’t help but feel like you’re in heaven on top of the hustle of the city.
In the daytime the pool is the prime chill spot and if there is anywhere to watch the sun go down behind the ocean, this is the place. The music sets a super chilled vibe and makes the atmosphere so peaceful.
Our time at Movenpick really was an unforgettable experience. The five star hotel delivered six star service and we’ll be keeping an eye out for the Swiss chain throughout our travels.
