Arriving in Sri Lanka was a breath of fresh air for us. Landing in the city got us all excited for our new local Sri Lankan experience. Our aim was to try and visit all the tourist places in colombo in just a few days. Here’s our guide for all the places to see in Colombo.
Tourist Places In Colombo – Things To Do
This comes up at the top of all the tourist places in Colombo for a reason. We paid 300 rupees for a ticket that allowed us to visit Seema Malaka, the small Buddhist temple on the lake, and also Gangaramaya itself, which was a beautiful introduction to the most practised religion in Sri Lanka!
Galle Face Green
A scenic spot for sunset and a mini break from the city for an evening. Here you can see plenty of local kids playing, friends meeting for street food and families strolling along the promenade.
The National Museum
Not only is it an absolutely stunning building and one of the top tourist places to see in Colombo, it holds many forms of art, carvings and statuaries from Sri Lanka’s ancient past. You should definitely add this to your list of places to see in Colombo.
Like all major cities there’s always plenty of places to shop.
Majestic City – for those big label European style shops.
Pettah Market – (back near the bus station) is another hot spot for the biggest local market in Colombo!
Not one of your typical tourist places in Colombo, but if you’re stuck for ideas, who needs an excuse to chill out and watch a movie at the cinema? At only 500 rupees (£2.50) for a 3D ticket, we jumped at the chance to see the new Spider-Man!
Where To Eat In Colombo
Galle Face Green – Not only is Galle Face Green one of the top places to see in Colombo, it is the perfect spot to grab a local delicacy whilst taking a beach front walk. We recommend stocking up on vegetable rottis or prawn vadai.
Dutch Hospital – For something a bit more fancy or a sit down meal then definitely head here. As the name suggests, an old hospital transformed into a huge outside food court with food varying from your average pub grub to some more upmarket food. Perfect for whatever the mood.
Luxury – Movenpick Hotel Colombo – The first five star hotel in Sri Lanka to be built in over 20 years and one of the nicest accommodations we’ve had the pleasure of staying in! You can read our full review of Movenpick Hotel here.
Mid-Budget – Cinnamon Red Colombo – A pleasant hotel chain with a great reputation within Sri Lanka. You can’t go wrong with Cinnamon.
