Checking in: Makulay Lodge, El Nido

Our first destination in the Philippines was the island of Palawan and as we headed straight up to El Nido we were welcomed to the islands by the guys at Makulay Lodge…

Tucked away behind the palms and overlooking the pristine blues of the ocean, Makulay Lodge has its location perfectly situated a two minute walk away from the main street of El Nido.

If you’re into adventure, it’s certain you’ll like this place. You can hide away in your own little cabin style villa dotted amongst a trail into the jungle. With shops, restaurants and the beach right on your doorstep, it made as a great base for us to explore the surrounding islands.

The couple who run the show, Andrew and Lala, were so helpful from the get go. They checked us into our jungle cabin, organised our private boat tour and arranged overnight moped hire all for a great price. They went above and beyond to make us feel right at home and we left as friends rather than hosts/guests.

As for our room itself, the set up was super spacious with a separate sitting area and plenty of storage space. The decor was cosy and simple, including an arrangement of shabby chic furniture and a retro style book case.

Attached to our living space was a separate bathroom and even a kitchenette. So after our adventure up the 200 steps, we had everything we needed for our stay in paradise.

Besides the accomodation, Makulay Lodge has its own bar and restaurant. Certainly a hit for those who like a good shisha session or a delicious meal with a view. It attracts many people who like a more chilled vibe and the ambience in the evening was super relaxing after a busy day touring the islands.

Overlooking the Filipino water but tucked away from the hustle and bustle, Makulay Lodge was a great introduction to the Philippines and a place we’d definitely recommend if we ever head back to El Nido…which I’m sure we will!
