Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk was one of the most rewarding short treks we’ve done for such an amazing view! Here’s all the info for visiting.
Barrenjoey Lighthouse is located at the head of the Palm Beach in Sydney.
It’s around a 2 hour drive from the city centre, so renting a car or grabbing a group of friends is definitely the best option.
Although there is also the option of taking a bus from Central, Town Hall or Wynyard to Palm Beach. It involves multiple changes and also takes around 2 hours.
For those short on time, or those that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on Get Your Guide available to book in advance.
The trek up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse is completely free!
On street parking is available around the Palm Beach area but within the reserve, it is charged per hour.
It costs around $10 in high season, although there are some free 2 hour spots on the road before you get to the golf course.

The best time to visit Barrenjoey Lighthouse is between October – March. These months generally offer sunny weather, while avoiding the heat of mid-summer and school holiday crowds.
Barrenjoey Lighthouse is still a less popular option than its competing viewpoints over at the Blue Mountains. However, as with anywhere in Sydney the best time to visit is always earlier in the morning!

Barrenjoey Lighthouse is an epic viewpoint and well worth a journey if you have some spare time in Sydney.
Standing at 350 feet above sea level, the Barrenyjoey Lighthouse Walk has become pretty popular for tourists and locals of recent years.
Once you head in from the road, you’ll pass Boat House Palm Beach and keep bearing left towards the beach. The trail from there is pretty self explanatory.
At the far end of the beach you’ll notice a sign pointing towards Barrenjoey Lighthouse. Another 100 metres in you’ll be given the option of two routes:
The Access Trail – 800m, 15min, grade 2.
The Smugglers Track – 400m, 10min, grade 3, steps.
We opted for the Smugglers Track and it’s a moderate hike to the top, involving steps and rocks. The other option we were told is much easier involving no steps and a flat pathway.
Either way it will take no more than 20 minutes including stops for photos. We’d recommend taking trainers for the walk and plenty of water.
The view from the top is worth it though, overlooking both beaches and the whole of the Palm Beach area. You can opt for the same route down or try the other way. Just make sure to treat yourself to some local chips from the town as a treat!
Fun fact: Palm Beach is the area in which the Australian television series ‘Home And Away’ is filmed. The town before the Barrenjoey Lighthouse walk is instantly recognisable as ‘Summer Bay’ from the show.
Those that are big fans of the show can even book the Official Home and Away Tour to Summer Bay.
If you’re lucky, you may even catch some filming take place on the day you visit. Unfortunately we didn’t, BUT fortunately we had the place to ourselves.
