Visiting The Incredible Lago Di Tovel – A Complete Guide
What To Pack? We’ve put together our Ultimate Travel Packing List for every type of trip.
Many hotels in the area of Val Di Non have bus transfers available. You can always organise that but we highly recommend renting a car. This way, you will arrive at the lake before anyone else and have it all to yourself.
Our trip to Lago Di Tovel was even more special because nobody else was there.
If you rent a car for your entire trip in Italy, you can pick the car up from the airport in which you land and drive from there into Trentino. Another option is of course a private taxi to the lake.
Lago Di Tovel is a stunning lake, situated in the Brenta Dolomites in Trentino, Italy. It sits at a height of 1178m metres high and is 0.38 square km. This miracle of nature was formed by a landslide, 1300 years ago.
The lake is in the depth of the enchanted forests with the stunning Brenta Dolomites as a backdrop, so you can only imagine how incredible it is.
We visit Lago Di Tovel in the autumn which is actually when the lake is at it’s prettiest. The orange and burgundy shades of trees against the emerald green lake really sets the perfect picture.
This lake first became famous for it’s bright colour. However, it’s not red anymore.
We were told when we visited, that there used to be cows perched around the lake so the mix of their manure with the a certain algae would turn the whole thing bright red. However, those animals were taken away and the lake has since stuck to it’s wonderful emerald green colour.
These facts kind of killed off many other explanations as to why this mysterious lake was a bright red, blood colour but it does still live with it’s many rumours.
There’s a trail that leads all the way around the Lago Di Tovel so you can find many different beautiful angles and unusual, piercing colours. It’s around a 45 minute walk in total.
There are also many other hiking trails inside the valley that leave from Lago Di Tovel. So if you’re in the mood to walk more, you have a few options to choose from.
If you don’t fancy walking, you can find a spot directly opposite the entrance at the naturally formed beach. Or you can also pack up a picnic on a sunny day and admire the view of the incredible Dolomites.
There are two famous hotels within the same grounds, which are located right next to the carpark by the entrance to the lake.
They both have restaurants where you can grab a coffee or a bite to eat once you’ve finished taking in the spectacular views at Lago Di Tovel.
One is more accessible than the other but they both have their very own prime spots at the lake front.
