How To Get To Levada Caldeirao Verde

Levada Caldeirao Verde is located in the north of Madeira island, just inland from the municipality of Santana.

If you are planning on visiting you should really book onto a guided tour. That way you have an expert guide that also provides pick up and drop off from hotels, torches (which you will need) and of course all the vital information about the levadas history and how it was built along the way.

We can highly recommend Adventure Kingdom who run tours and levada walks throughout the island on different days of the week. All of which you can be found here.

What To Expect At Levada Caldeirao Verde Madiera

Firstly, don’t panic. The walk is completely flat all the way there are back.

We say there and back because from the starting point at Queimadas Forestry Park you trek to the waterfall (that is the source of Levada Caldeirao Verde) and back again.

So we spent our first morning on Madeira winding along the 6.5km walkway of Levada Caldeirao Verde. Learning all about how the impressive work of art was built in the 18th century, and how the natural source of water is still to this day dispersed throughout the island.

The levada carries the water that runs off the highest mountains of Madeira, through the cliffs and mountains along the way.

Off he goes, over the bridge and along the levada

Lauren the climber – Don’t worry this is not part of the track

This 4 hour walk is not only a historical lesson but also the opportunity to walk through tunnels carved by hand out of the rock and gives some spectacular views of the surrounding terrain.

After the 4 tunnels and 6.5km of nature, the waterfall appears on the left of the levada and is only a few metres of steps along the stream bed to reach it.

The Levada Caldeirao Verde waterfall is a beautiful spot to catch your breath, refuel on lunch and enjoy the sound of the 100m falls. Before lacing up the boots for the return trip.
