Hiking Nong Khiaw Viewpoint (Phadeng Peak) In Laos Guide

Hiking Nong Khiaw Viewpoint (Phadeng Peak) In Laos Guide

Nong Khiaw Viewpoint is a 1-2 hour trek to the top of Phadeng Peak in Laos. With incredible views above the clouds here’s everything you need to know.

How To Get To Nong Khiaw Viewpoint

Nong Khiaw Viewpoint (or Phadeng Peak as it’s known by locals) is located in the town of Nong Khiaw, a small quiet village in the mountainous area of Loas.

It’s around 3 hours North of Luang Prabang, and the roads aren’t great, so we recommend hiring a taxi or a driver for your visit.

You can prebook a Luang Prabang/Nong Khiaw: Private Transfer Service here.

Nong Khiaw Viewpoint is walkable from town, although we were working with Destination Mekong who organised transport, so it’s best to ask at your guesthouse first for the distance first.

For those short on time, or that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on Get Your Guide available to book in advance.

What To Expect Hiking Nong Kiaw Viewpoint (Phadeng Peak)

We set off at 5.30am, just as sun was rising, in order to catch the low light on top of the hill and beat the heat at Nong Khiaw Viewpoint.

The trek, or hike, is really not that bad. Unless it’s been raining that is!

We’d heard from local expats that they’d climbed Nong Khiaw Viewpoint in little over an hour with their children on a dry day. Although we hit the trail the morning after a huge storm and so the track was super muddy and took us nearly 2.

Never the less the trek wasn’t too strenuous just humid if anything and the way up is a mixture of paved steps and tree trunks so as long as you have closed shoes you’ll be fine.

The view from the top was incredible! The clouds were hovering just above the town and the mountains surrounding us were peaking through the top!

We spent around an hour at the top of Phadeng Peak taking it all in whilst eating our Laos baguettes for breakfast!

A day we’ll always remember.
