If you’re heading to Myanmar no trip would be complete without a visit to the old palace city. So here’s our guide of the top 5 things to do in Mandalay.
5 Things To Do In Mandalay
1. Mandalay Palace
The last royal palace of the last Burmese monarchy. This centre piece of Mandalay, surrounded by its beautiful moat, is only 10,000 Kyat to explore and will entertain for days.
2. Kuthodaw Pagoda
Fancy taking a read of the largest book in the world? You probably won’t have time to finish it but spread over 729 stone-inscription caves, Kuthadow Pagoda is well worth a visit.
It kind of has to be on your things to do in Mandalay list!
3. U Bein Bridge
Another record breaker and popular tourist destination. The oldest and largest teak wood bridge in the world is a must see and once you make your way back you can browse through the touristy markets… And remember, take your boxing gloves in order to fight your way through the crowds.
4. Mandalay Hill
An easy little hike at only 240 metres high, Mandalay Hill is the perfect place to watch sunset over the city on your final day. We spent a good couple of hours at the top reflecting on our month of Myanmar adventures.
5. Dee Dote Waterfall
Technically it’s not ‘in’ Mandalay. Best reached from there or Pyin Oo Lwin and well worth the hour drive that it takes to get there…one of the bluest waterfalls we’ve ever seen!
Luxury – Hilton Mandalay – For a 5 star hotel and a peace of luxury in Mandalay the Hilton carries the highest reputation.
Mid-Budget – Hotel Venus – A cheap and cheerful, centrally located hotel, Hotel Venus is ideal for a few nights stay.
Backpacker – Ostello Bello – We’d heard about Ostello Bello before we even arrived in Myanmar, it’s highly regarded in the backpacking world as hostel heaven.
