Myanmar Itinerary – Top Places To Visit In Myanmar

Apart from the big 4 most tourists have no real Myanmar itinerary. So here’s a route based on our personal experience and best things to do in Myanmar.

Things To Do In Myanmar – Our Myanmar Itinerary

We’ve broken it down into two sections, The South – which a lot of people either skip out or don’t know exists when backpacking Myanmar. The Mainland – which is the more common visitors route just with a guide of where to head first.

Southern Myanmar

You definitely should not skip all the things to do In Myanmar southern states.

Yangon

The best possible starting place for your ‘Golden Land’ trip. With it being home to the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda, you’ll soon realise why Myanmar was given such a nickname.

Mawlamyine

Surrounded by river and history, the capital of the Mon State is full of culture and rural villages. It’s also home to the world’s largest reclining Budda.

Although there are more touristic things to do in Myanmar, you should definitely not skip the southern states.

Hpa-An

Again its states capital, this Kayin located town is home to some really interesting local villages. It’s great for kayaking and landscapes and well worth a visit if you go that way when backpacking Myanmar.

Kyaiktiyo

Home to the famous Golden Rock, most will at least take this journey out from Yangon to witness the gravity defying Buddhist monument.

Things to do in Myanmar mainland and which places to see

Yangon

So whether you end up back here after your South trip or have just arrived, you know the drill for The Golden Land.

Ngapali Beach

A short distance but a 9/10 hour drive West of Yangon, will land you in the most photographed palm tree beach of Myanmar. So if you have no time limit when backpacking Myanmar then it’s definitely a worthy Instagram spot.

Bagan

Next, head up North and find out exactly why Bagan is THE most popular destination in Burma. Bagan, without a doubt HAS to be added to your Myanmar itinerary.

Most of the people that are backpacking Myanmar do not miss this spot. With over 2,200 pagodas in the area and giving one of the most beautiful balloon infested sunrises in the world, if there’s one place you have to make it to…it’s Bagan!

Waking up for sunrise was one of our favourite things to do in Myanmar.

Kalaw

If Kalaw is in your Myanmar itinerary, it will be the starting point when you decide on the Kalaw – Inle Lake hike. You get to spend time and eat with a local Burmese family learning all about their culture.

Inle Lake

As for Inle Lake itself…well, what an amazing boat day and cultural experience. Witness first hand how the locals live and survive on floating villages. Our day on Inle Lake was one of our favourite things to do in Myanmar.

Hsipaw

The hiking capital of Burma. Need we say anymore? Grab your trekking boots and get walking.

Mandalay

An easy finishing point on your Myanmar itinerary to either fly out from or head back down to Yangon. Mandalay is an interesting city to end your Burmese experience.

Round Up Of Our Myanmar Itinerary

That concludes our Myanmar Itinerary. There are always places you can add for example Naypyidaw or even Pyin Oo Lwin, for a taste of scenic highland and old British buildings. But as far as we’re concerned there’s plenty of things to keep you smiling in the happiest country in the world.
